the first bike that I owned was an 81 yamaha 250, I had fun on it but out grew it really fast (the first time I went rideing with a friend and couldn't keep up with him) so I got the savage its fair priced and handles really well. I don't think you would have a proublem with getting the 650 as long as you treat it right it will treat you right.
